Portrait of William R. Robins

William R. Robins

Founder. Writer. A lifetime of building, distilled into a single book.

Will Robins has built a remarkable career spanning academia, global corporations, entrepreneurial ownership, and business development. His lifelong pursuit of understanding how businesses grow — from their smallest beginnings to their largest achievements — forms the foundation of From Smaller to Larger.

His journey began in academia, studying at the Wharton School, Indiana University, and Harvard Business School. There he gained not only solid grounding in business theory and organizational history, but also an early appreciation for the patterns and principles that shape what companies do and why they succeed.

Will then stepped into the world of major corporations, working with American Can and PepsiCo. These roles provided an inside view of how large enterprises leverage scale — how the balance between fixed and variable costs drives profitability, and how economies of scale strengthen competitive advantage.

Seeking a deeper understanding of business in action, Will moved into small business ownership with Princeton Printing. As an entrepreneur, he learned the realities that theory alone cannot teach — personal risk, precise decision making, and the practical mechanics of how a company truly operates.

His success at Princeton Printing ultimately led to the acquisition of International Graphics, one of the largest printing companies in the United States at the time and on the brink of bankruptcy. Guiding the company back to health, Will saw how an organization can change so completely that it not only grows larger but becomes fundamentally stronger. He sold the business at the peak of the 1979 boom and relocated to Italy.

In Italy, Will drew together every lesson from the earlier phases of his career. He built a company intentionally designed to integrate theory with practice, grounded in a thoughtful balance of fixed and variable costs and guided by a single unifying vision. It was there that he refined the central idea that defines his philosophy: how companies evolve — deliberately and structurally — from smaller to larger.

Through these interconnected experiences, Will Robins offers a rare and deeply informed perspective on business growth — rooted in real-world practice at every scale.

A company, properly understood, is the lengthened shadow of its Founder. It is him writ large.

Will wrote From Smaller to Larger to share what he learned. You can read more about it here.
